7 Ways Online Coaches Can “Level Up”

Written by Conquer Athlete Coach Jason Leydon

In today’s information age, finding an online coach is like shooting fish in a barrel.  Everywhere you look there is another platform, another program, another coach.  Even though the principles are the same, what varies from coach to coach is their ability to not only apply the principles to the athletes they are working with, but their deliverables to the clients in a professional manner.

Below are Conquer Athlete’s seven principles to being a good online coach:

  1. Establish clear boundaries and expectations: Before starting the coaching relationship, establish clear boundaries and expectations with the client. This includes discussing the coach's availability, communication methods, fees, cancellation policies, and confidentiality agreements.

  2. Listen actively: Online coaches should actively listen to their clients to understand their needs and goals. This includes asking open-ended questions, summarizing what the client has said, and providing empathetic responses.

  3. Customize coaching sessions: Online coaches should customize their coaching sessions to meet the specific needs of their clients. This may involve using different coaching techniques, tools, or exercises to help the client achieve their goals.

  4. Provide constructive feedback: Online coaches should provide constructive feedback to their clients that is specific, actionable, and respectful. Feedback should be focused on the client's behaviors and actions, not on their personality or character.

  5. Maintain professionalism: Online coaches should maintain professionalism in their interactions with clients. This includes being punctual, respectful, and responsive to client inquiries.

  6. Be ethical: Online coaches should adhere to ethical principles and standards of practice. This includes respecting client confidentiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, and only providing coaching services within their areas of expertise.

  7. Continuously improve: Online coaches should continuously improve their skills and knowledge through ongoing education and professional development. This helps ensure they are providing the best possible coaching services to their clients.

When you are working with a coach, we believe that these seven principles are non-negotiables and must be met in order to deliver a good experience and quality product to your clients.
