Why Masters Athletes Need a Personal Coach

In the world of CrossFit, the ability to blend the diverse modalities of the sport takes great care, precision, and understanding of training principles. What’s even more important is how the principles for development across the modalities are prescribed to people. As we all know, each person is different and their response to a training prescription can not only vary from person to person, but can/will also be different from that very person at a different point in time of their lives.

Where I see people going wrong within programs is when they try to follow a program that the masses are doing, or even a program that is written for someone else, and they then have little to no contact with a guide to assist them along the way.

Training lies within the Coach’s and program’s ability to manage stress from an adaptive and recovery perspective. So, if the person training is on a random program, chances are that they will get random results along with random progress.

This concept is exacerbated as you age.

With age comes more responsibility, potential stress, and a heightened attention to training within time allotted. Most Masters athletes have full time jobs, families ,and extra responsibilities. This means how long they have to train varies and even shortens. Also, Masters athletes have gone through more over the years and the joint-by-joint stress bank is varied (the stress bank refers to how much stress joints can take from a loading perspective before it is too much stress and leads to injury).

Masters athletes require a personal coach who understands them, their goals, their needs, and their abilities even more than other athletes in order to make sure they are being guided along the right path to drive the right adaptation.
