10 Step Approach To CrossFit Masters Athlete Programming

a step-by-step approach to programming for CrossFit Masters AthleteS:

  1. Consult with the athlete to understand their goals, life experiences, timeline, training age, injuries, and how much they can train a day.

  2. Assess the athlete to acquire a good understanding of their movement quality.

  3. Assess the athlete to get a baseline fitness level for them.

  4. Test the athlete to understand their starting point and be able to build out priorities as it relates to their training / goal timeline.

  5. Build out a solid program with the proper progressions for this athlete around what they can manage, sustain, and grow from.

  6. Ensure that the prescription is written in a way that will elevate their fitness and not hinder them by trying to force movements on them that they should not be doing.

  7. Make sure you are addressing the proper fatigue management protocols so that the masters athlete has the right time to recover and progress and not feel beaten down the whole time.

  8. Communicate with the athlete on a set weekly basis to ensure the work is there, they feel good, and are held accountable.

  9. Be ready and able to address issues as Masters athletes have more situations around lifestyle and reactions to training.

  10. Understand that this is a priority, but not their main goal.  Program and communicate in a way that allows them to stay dialed in with their family, work, life, and training goals.
