3 Steps to Have a Great CrossFit Open Season

The 2023 CrossFit Open is a short five months away! With the holidays approaching, by the time you come up for air, the open will be here. So, this is the perfect time to really dial in the necessary tools to ensure you have the best CrossFit Open season yet. For this to happen, I broke down the top three action items you need to put into place.

Preparation.

What I am referring to with preparation, goes beyond just the training. You will need to ensure your movement quality is pristine. When you are training, you have to make sure you are locking out all reps, hitting proper depth and training the movement, as it should be performed, especially when you fatigue and/or increase intensity. You need to dial in your nutrition and hydration to optimize your performance and recovery. You need to get ahead of any muscular/joint issues by having a proper warm up and cool down. You need to focus on your transitions, and work on getting into stressful environments so you are prepared for the qualifiers. By working on these “outside the box” concepts you will be preparing yourself for success.

Mindset.

Mindset is not something that you can just turn on and turn off. Mindset is training, just like anything else, through observation, acknowledgment, and focus. Having an elite mindset requires the following:

  1. Working on having a growth mindset for all areas of your life.

  2. Understanding the difference between motivation and commitment and how they work together.

  3. Focusing and having awareness around your actions.

  4. Creating daily habits of excellence for your goals.

  5. Working on meditation and your dialogue to always be in the right mindset.

These few areas will have you in the right place to drive further success for yourself

Programming.

In this stage of your programming, you should still be focusing on building strength, increasing your body’s ability to have strength repeatability, acquiring resilience with movement repetition, and building overall capacity. However, with the next few months, you should be starting to shift this volume, accumulation, and resilience phase into more intensity and resilience through intensity and eventually shift towards competition prep. Remember, to have the best Open season yet, you need to plan and prepare for the CrossFit Open.  Make sure you are on the right program that is attacking your weaknesses without forgetting about your strengths. Make sure you are paying attention to fatigue as the volume/intensity picks up, and the program is built around improving your fatigue limiters.
