Cultivating a Growth Mindset: Practical Habits for Success

Written by Conquer Athlete Coach Jason Leydon

Let’s into the world of growth mindsets. As a strength and conditioning coach, over the years I’ve observed firsthand how the mental framework we adopt influences our physical training and overall well-being. A growth mindset, a term popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, refers to the belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. This contrasts with a fixed mindset, which assumes that our capabilities are static and unchangeable.

Whether you’re an athlete looking to improve your game, a fitness enthusiast hoping to reach new heights, or someone just starting their fitness journey, adopting a growth mindset can be a game changer. Here are some practical habits that can help cultivate this mindset:

1. Set Learning Goals Instead of Performance Goals

Focus on what you can learn through the process rather than just the end result. For example, instead of setting a goal to immediately lift a certain weight, set a goal to learn proper lifting techniques and gradually increase your strength. This shift emphasizes improvement and personal development, core aspects of a growth mindset.

2. Value Effort Over Innate Ability

Praise and value effort, not just talent or results. Recognize that persistence, resilience, and grit are often the real drivers behind success. When facing challenges, remind yourself or others that effort is a path to mastery and should be celebrated.

3. Embrace Challenges

View challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles that could lead to failure. Each challenge you face in the gym or in life is a chance to stretch your abilities and learn. When you start to embrace challenges regularly, you’ll find that your fear of failure decreases.

4. Learn from Criticism

Feedback is crucial for improvement. Instead of taking criticism personally, see it as valuable information that can help refine your strategies and techniques. Whether it’s feedback from a coach or results from a competition, use it constructively to develop your abilities.

5. Celebrate Others’ Success

In a growth mindset, the success of others is an inspiration, not a threat. Celebrate the achievements of your peers and learn from their journeys. This not only fosters a positive community but also encourages a learning culture where ideas and strategies are shared openly.

6. Reflect Regularly

Take time to reflect on your experiences. What did you learn? What could you improve? Reflection helps you to internalize what you've learned and understand the areas where you can develop further. Keeping a training journal can be an excellent way to track your reflections and growth.

7. Cultivate Perseverance

Developing new skills takes time and patience. Recognize that setbacks are part of the learning process and stay committed to your goals. Persistence is key in transitioning from where you are to where you want to be.

8. Stay Curious

Always be willing to learn and explore new ways to enhance your training and well-being. Curiosity leads to continuous learning, which is central to the growth mindset.

Conclusion

Adopting these habits can significantly influence how you approach your training and daily life. Remember, a growth mindset isn't about proving you are the best but improving and becoming better than you were yesterday. By embracing the process of learning and staying committed to personal development, you’ll not only see improvements in your physical fitness but also in your overall life satisfaction.
