Training a CrossFit Games Team

Over the past 15 years of being in the Sport of CrossFit, I have developed 8 different teams that have all made the CrossFit Games.

To me, the most exciting part is that not one of those teams was the same team as the year before. Each year, having a new team presented new challenges, new personalities, new strengths, new weaknesses, and new focus on bonding. Over the years and the teams, I can honestly say there is one attribute that separates the teams that do well and are resilient, versus those that fold.

So, the million dollar question is what is that one thing.

It is a balance of power. What does this mean? It means that within the team, each person understands the others’ strengths and weaknesses. There is a continuum of leadership around these strengths and weaknesses, a succumbing to who leads and follows without resistance, and compassion around each person's weaknesses.

What does this do?

This emotional balance of power creates harmony amongst the team in regards to an understanding that at any given moment we are all equal. This understanding creates more resilience amongst the team due to their ability to not put unwarranted “added'' pressure onto others at times where they already feel pressure. This act allows the team to succumb to ebbs and flows without finger pointing, blame, or negations.

How can coaches promote this behavior?

It comes down to the beautiful art of communication and driving home understanding with each person around different situations. This is where the true act of coaching lies. The blend between the x’s and o’s into the connection to the emotional level within each person.

For many teams, this is the missing ingredient. I have seen great teams, with all the talent in the world, fall short when times get tough and long due to too much finger pointing and not enough empathy amongst the group.
